Job Description

The position will be split 50:50 between Small Animal Community Practice and a rotating position throughout some services of the Small Animal Hospital which may include Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Neurology, Anesthesia, Theriogenology, and Nutrition/Physical Rehabilitation.  The potential exists for this, over time, to transfer into a full time position that no longer floats between services. The Small Animal Community Practice veterinary technicians assist faculty with case management, client communications, record keeping, teaching third and fourth year veterinary students, and other general practice techniques/procedures as required to keep Community Practice functioning smoothly.  Responsibilities include client communication and some patient scheduling. The Community Practice service technicians are very involved in all aspects of the practice including dentistry and elective surgical procedures. Involvement with dental care will consist of assisting/performing dental prophies, taking dental radiographs, and assisting with dental extractions and other specialized dental procedures such as root canals, jaw fracture repairs and oral tumor removals. Elective surgeries include such procedures as spays, neuters, gastropexies, and declaws.  Technicians will be involved in the preparation of these patients and the preparation and administration of medications and monitoring of patient vital parameters during procedures, as well as providing patient care during the pre-, peri-, and post anesthetic period for dental procedures and elective surgeries. The position will also assist students and perform collection and analysis of cytological samples, perform complete fecal exams, urinalysis, venipuncture, fine needle aspiration, local regional anesthetic clocks, and catheter placement.
