Missouri Veterinary Medical Board Clarifies Scope of Practice Regarding Suturing
Jefferson City, MO — July 25, 2025 — The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board (MVMB) has issued a formal clarification regarding the scope of practice for veterinary support staff. At its July 25 meeting, the Board determined that under the Missouri Veterinary Practice Act and Rules, suturing skin incisions is not legally permitted for registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) or unregistered assistants in the state.
This clarification reaffirms that suturing is a procedure reserved for licensed veterinarians. The Board advises veterinary practices, educators, and team members to consult the Required Levels of Supervision chart for guidance on permissible tasks depending on credentials and supervision levels.
